An ice fisherman was rescued by RCMP this past weekend after his ATV had broken through the ice in the Winnipeg River.

On March 18, 2012, just after 7pm, Powerview RCMP as well as local emergency services were dispatched to a complaint of a person in the water of the Winnipeg River at Sagkeeng FN, Manitoba.

On arrival RCMP members observed an adult male in the river clinging to the ice, approximately 100 metres from shore. He was conscious and appeared to be slipping further into the water.

Investigation revealed that the man, a 28-year-old man from the Sagkeeng area, had been ice fishing when the ATV he was traveling on went partially through the ice, at which point he fell into the water.

Two RCMP members put on floatation suits and used a borrowed canoe to make their way across the ice and open water to the man. The man was passed a rope and a life jacket and brought into the canoe and taken back to shore. The man was then transported by ambulance to hospital for treatment.
