Vic Toews, MP for Provencher applauded an initiative included in Economic Action Plan 2012 which proposes $150 million over two years to support repairs and improvements to existing small public infrastructure facilities through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

“In Economic Action Plan 2012, our Conservative government is squarely focused on what matters to Canadians – jobs and economic growth,” said Toews. “While Canada has created over 610,000 net new jobs since July 2009, the global economy remains fragile and too many Canadians are still looking for work. That’s why we’re moving forward with a positive plan to bolster the long-term economic growth of Manitoba and all of Canada.”

Community-based facilities contribute to the quality of life in small communities and large urban centres across Canada. To support repairs and improvements to existing facilities, such as community centres, Economic Action Plan 2012 proposes $150 million over two years for the establishment of a Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. This new Fund will improve the quality of facilities enjoyed by Canadians while supporting job creation in communities across the country.

The Fund will be delivered by the regional development agencies and will support projects on a cost-shared basis in partnership with municipalities, community organizations and not-for-profit entities. Projects will be selected on the basis of their readiness to proceed and the anticipated economic benefits, including job creation.

“Our Government is taking concrete steps to develop a long-term plan for public infrastructure,” said Toews. “The creation of the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund will provide municipalities and organizations across Canada with much-needed support to upgrade existing facilities.”
