The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and MP for Provencher welcomed today’s announcement that the Government of Canada will share the cost of eligible expenditures incurred by Manitoba through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) for damages caused by a windstorm in the Red River Valley area in 2008.

“Our government has a strong working relationship with the province of Manitoba, which has resulted in a decrease in the amount of time it takes to deliver assistance following a natural disaster,” said Toews. “During a natural disaster our first priority is to protect the safety and security of Canadians. We also assist provinces and territories with the costs of dealing with natural disasters.

The windstorm, which occurred during May 16th and 17th, 2008 resulted in damage to infrastructure and the accumulation of soil in ditches bordering municipal roads. Municipalities affected by the storm include the R.M. of Cartier, R.M. of Dufferin, R.M. of Grey, R.M. of Macdonald, R.M. of Morris and R.M. of Montcalm.

The province estimated the recovery costs to be approximately $2.1 million which would include the restoration of drainage for municipal roads in affected areas.
