During the week of April 23, 2012, RCMP Federal Enforcement Section executed search warrants at four Winnipeg businesses in relation to an ongoing investigation under the Copyright, Trademark, and Textile Labeling Acts.
The search warrants were executed at two stores at the Forks Market Place, one store at St. Vital Centre and one store at Portage Place in Winnipeg.
Counterfeit items seized included Nintendo, John Deere, Hello Kitty, Angry Bird, NHL, DC Shoes, Hasbro, Xbox, Quicksilver, Paul Frank, Sesame Street, Transformers and Alvin and the Chipmunks.
“We have been working closely with these companies to help identify stores that are selling counterfeit products” advises Cpl. John Montgomery of the RCMP. “As usual, some of these fakes are very good quality and some are very poor, yet they are being sold for the regular retail price or even higher”.
As a result of this seizure RCMP investigators have thousands of items to catalogue and are estimating the total amount seized this week exceeding a retail value of $70,000.
Police continue to investigate.
