Seniors across Canada will soon have new opportunities to volunteer, mentor younger generations and help raise awareness of elder abuse thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).
Vic Toews, Member of Parliament for Provencher, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors).
“Our government recognizes the diversity of skills, knowledge and experience that seniors contribute to our society and the economy,” said MP Toews. “Through initiatives like the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and are able to continue as active, participating members of their communities.”
The following 16 organizations in Provencher will receive a total of $195,867 in funding:
Club de l’Amitie – La Broquerie
The organization will renovate flooring to continue to support the social participation of seniors by offering meal and physical activity programs.
Evergreen Senior Citizens Club – Sprague
The club will repair the existing well to support the social participation of seniors by continuing activities such as the meal program and various workshops.
Roseau Valley Legion Branch #160 – Dominion City
The organization will renovate the kitchen cupboards, washroom, install air conditioning and replace two windows to support the social participation of seniors by continuing to offer the meal and exercise programs.
Morris Area Senior Services – Morris
The organization will support social participation by holding computer classes with young students and an interactive game exercise program allowing the seniors to play with the students.
Les Blés d’Or de Lorette Inc, Lorette
Seniors involved in the organization will support social participation by purchasing a sofa, tables and chairs, replace a window and repair the billiard table to continue offering a meal program, cards, bingo and billiard games.
Golden Friendship Circle Inc – Niverville
The organization will install two air conditioning units and upgrade wiring to continue to support social participation and inclusion of seniors by offering the weekly meal program.
Golden Leisure Club – Pine Falls
The club will replace the flooring to continue to support the social participation of seniors by providing card games, pool, book borrowing and exercise programs.
RM of Springfield – Oakbank
Seniors involved in the organization will support social participation in their community by purchasing outdoor fitness equipment to offer outdoor physical activity on the community walking trail.
Reynolds Senior Citizen’s Club
The centre will purchase electronic equipment and a pool table to support social participation to continue activities such as movie viewing, pool games and excursions.
Silver Haven Club – Powerview
The club will replace the range hood, paint the club’s room, repair the pool table and purchase kitchen equipment to continue to support the social participation of seniors by offering the meal program, shuffleboard, cards and exercise activities.
Paradise Village Residents Association – Ste. Anne
The association will purchase a bingo machine to support the social participation of seniors and continue weekly bingo games, cards, quilting, zumba, water aerobics and other physical activities.
Eastman Senior Citizen’s Council – Lac du Bonnet
Seniors involved in the organization will promote volunteerism among seniors and other generations by recruiting new members from the younger seniors to actively engage them in community events.
Pioneer Club of Lac du Bonnet Inc – Lac du Bonnet
The organization will renovate bathroom flooring and roof heat tape system to support social participation of seniors by continuing their daily drop-in and lunch program and floor curling activities.
Pine Grove Seniors Inc – South Junction
Seniors involved with the organization will support social participation in their community by purchasing a treadmill and bike to continue to offer exercise programs, card games, pool and shuffleboard.
Le Club Jovial Inc – Ste. Anne
The organization will conduct renovations to office flooring and the washroom to continue to support the social participation of seniors by holding dances and card game activities.
Winnipeg River Senior Services Inc – Pine Falls
Seniors involved in the organization will expand the awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse by delivering a one day special event on the subject to seniors.
Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded more than 10,400 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. This year, the Government of Canada will provide more than $35.6 million in funding for almost 2,000 community projects.
