On May 22, 2012, just after 9:30pm, Thompson RCMP received a report of a missing boater on Split Lake near Tataskweyak Cree Nation.
Investigation revealed that a 41-year-old man from York Landing was traveling back and forth by boat from York Landing to Split Lake throughout the day. The man left Split Lake to return to York Landing at about 8:15pm. At around 8:30pm, an empty boat was found running and going in circles in the area. The boat was brought to shore where it was discovered to have damage consistent with striking a reef.
Currently Thompson Rural RCMP, Thompson Police Service Dog (PSD), (CREST) Manitoba North District Crime Reduction Enforcement Support Team members, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and community members from York Landing and Split Lake are assisting in the search.
Witnesses report the man was not wearing a personal floatation device.

On June 20, 2012, the body of John Edward Sinclair was located by boaters near the shore in the vicinity of where the empty boat was found. No foul play is suspected and police continue to investigate.
