June 11-17, 2012, is National Blood Donor Week, a week to recognize and celebrate volunteer blood donors across the country.
The National Blood Donor Week Act was passed by the Government of Canada in 2008 and is a wonderful opportunity to build awareness on the importance of becoming a blood donor and to engage more Canadians to help their fellow citizens.
June 14, 2012, is also World Blood Donor Day, a day the World Health Organization declares every year to honour those around the world who give the gift of life.
Canadian Blood Services will be activating the “Blood Signal” on Monday to communicate that the need for blood and blood products is constant and that they are proactively increasing their efforts to encourage Canadians to donate now and during the summer months. The Blood Signal serves as a rallying cry for communities and organizations to come together and save lives and Canadian Blood Services is hoping that your organization can make a special effort to do so in the next few next weeks and throughout the summer. For those groups who are not yet eligible or have booked an appointment this summer already, Canadian Blood Services says thank you! Please do not change your regular donation routine.
