On June 26, 2012, at about 5:30pm, Russell RCMP Detachment and local EMS were dispatched to a possible drowning at the Asessippi Provincial Park on the Shell River.
Despite resuscitation attempts and being rushed to hospital, the victim, identified as an 83-year-old man from Winnipeg, was pronounced deceased.
RCMP learned that deceased had been river tubing with family members when they lost sight of him. He was found unconscious.
Police say that the deceased was not wearing a life jacket at the time and the cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy will take place in the coming days.
RCMP are urging the public to always wear a life jacket when boating or enjoying any aquatic activities.
