Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation advises that work has begun on a major upgrade to the southbound lanes of PTH 75 on the Manitoba side of the Emerson international border crossing. Motorists are advised to expect some delays.
The project involves only the southbound lanes of PTH 75 and will last until approximately the end of September. The project, at the Emerson/Pembina crossing, includes construction of a dedicated, southbound commercial truck lane and the addition of concrete medians, traffic signals and new lighting.
The new truck lane will improve traffic flows, especially for commercial trucks but also for cars, when lining up at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The new traffic lights will assist travellers entering and exiting the Emerson Duty Free shop parking lot.
During construction, one of the three southbound lanes of traffic must be closed and circumstances may require that only one lane be open for short periods of time. Lane closures will be clearly marked and directional signs will be in place. No work is planned on weekends.
In addition, the Manitoba government is working with the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to co-ordinate the project and minimize impacts at peak periods of cross border traffic. Access to the duty free shop and Canada Border Services Agency will be fully maintained throughout construction.
