On April 1, 2009 around 9:30 PM Portage la Prairie RCMP, Portage Fire Department and Portage Ambulance responded to a single vehicle, pulling a trailer, rollĀ over in the ditch on Highway 1 west of Portage la Prairie.

A Ford Ranger heading east lost control and went into the median ditch near Simplot Road. The vehicle rolled into the ditch and became submerged in water, trapping its two passengers inside the cab. RCMP were unable to open the doors to the get the passengers out, so the Fire Department used the jaws of life to extract the two occupants.

No injuries were reported, however the passengers were exposed to cold water and below zero degree temperature. The occupants, a 62 year old man from Winnipeg, and his daughter, a 34 year old woman from Vancouver, were transported to Portage hospital and kept over night for observation.

Portage la Prairie RCMP would like to remind motorists to take into account the road conditions, and to adjust their speed and departure times to allow for safe travel on the city streets and highways.
