On August 20, 2012, shortly after 8:30pm, Altona RCMP Detachment along with the local Fire and EMS and the assistance of the Altona Police Service responded to a call of a plane crash at the Altona Airport in the RM of Rhineland.
RCMP learned that a Piper aircraft was traveling westbound and had attempted to land on a grass landing strip located at the airport. The plane continued traveling west after touching down on the landing strip and came to an abrupt stop in a drainage ditch on the far west end of the runway.
The pilot, a 70-year-old Altona man and a 65-year-old male passenger from Altona were taken to the local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
RCMP continue to investigate in collaboration with the Transportation Safety Board. Alcohol is not considered a factor in this incident.
