The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and MP for Provencher, along with the Honourable Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, today announced financial support for the construction of a new University of Manitoba Sport Precinct.
“The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of supporting community infrastructure initiatives that will boost the economy and create jobs for Manitobans, and Canadians,” said Minister Toews. “This new University of Manitoba Sport Precinct is a welcome addition to our province and will provide economic opportunities and improved access to high quality sports facilities.””
“We are pleased to support the University of Manitoba and the redevelopment of their athletic facilities,” said Premier Gary Doer. “These improvements will benefit students, staff and athletes, and will also benefit the many people who participate in athletic programs at this facility.”
The funding announced today will allow for the refurbishment of the public outdoor stadium facility on the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba, the relocation of soccer and tennis fields, the construction of a new University of Manitoba Fitness Centre and an inflatable ‘bubble’ over University Stadium, which will allow the facility to be available for use year-round.
The Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba will jointly contribute up to $35 million for the project. Federal funding will be strictly limited to the amateur and community sport components of the University of Manitoba Sport Precinct and will allow for greater community use.
The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Province of Manitoba is working closely with the federal government to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent well on priorities in the province’s communities.
