On August 26, 2012, at 8:10pm, Thompson RCMP received and responded to a report of an impaired driver in downtown Thompson.

Police say that a witness, who utilized the Thompson and area “RID 911” program, reported observing an on-duty taxi driver exit a liquor vendor with a beer. The witness also believed the driver to be intoxicated while operating the taxi.

Immediate patrols were made by Thompson RCMP officers who located the vehicle and the driver on Churchill Drive. Police say that the taxi driver had just dropped off two fares.

A subsequent investigation lead to the arrest of the driver for impaired driving. He was identified as 46-year-old Thompson resident. The driver now faces charges of impaired driving and driver over .08. He was released on a promise to appear to attend Thompson Court on October 19, 2012.

Residents of Thompson and area are encouraged to call 204-677-6911 if they suspect a vehicle is being operated by an impaired driver. The public can play a key role in helping to avert the tragic consequences of drunk driving. Reducing the number of alcohol-related deaths on our roadways is an RCMP and Manitoba Public Insurance priority.
