Sergeant Randy Dixon, Moose Lake Detachment Commander, with Chief Phillip Buck, Mosakahiken Cree Nation.

On September 19, 2012, members and employees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police D Division detachment in Moose Lake celebrated the new detachment’s official opening. In attendance was Chief Superintendent Scott Kolody, Acting Commanding Officer of RCMP D Division; Superintendent Brenda Lucki, RCMP North District Commander; Chief Phillip Buck, Mosakahiken Cree Nation; Mayor Sandra Lambert, Moose Lake Community; Band Constables, and local dignitaries.

“This new building is a symbol of the RCMP’s pride in serving Manitoba’s northern communities,” said Chief Superintendent Kolody. “I am grateful to the community for making us so much a part of the fabric of their lives and traditions, and I’m proud of our members for their commitment to providing quality, professional police service to this community.”

Upon arrival in this northern community, the view of the contemporary detachment is eye-catching. The new one-story, energy efficient 400-square -metre building accommodates six RCMP personnel.

This modern office will provide an accessible community facility for RCMP to provide quality policing services to Mosakahiken Cree Nation, the Moose Lake Metis settlement as well as Traders Lake and Crossing Bay, both part of Mosakahiken Cree Nation.

The ceremony opened with Norman and Herbert Sanderson performing a smudge, as well as drumming and singing. Students from the Mosakahiken School sang “O Canada” for the official flag raising, followed by a blessing from Reverent Clara Lambert. Guests enjoyed refreshments and a tour of the new detachment as well as grass dancing by Braden McNabb from Mosakahiken School. The ceremony concluded with drumming and a song performed by Norman and Herbert Sanderson.
