Doug Robertson, President of the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) announced that the Prairie Oat Growers Association (POGA) has
joined the Grain Growers of Canada.
“The 14,000 farmer members of the Prairie Oat Growers bring experience to our organization on the issues facing their commodity and we look forward to that input,” said Robertson. “Their progressive philosophy fits well with our vision, and they feel there is value in belonging to a strong policy-orientated national farm organization.”
“Over the last ten years, the value and volume of our oat crop has been increasing in importance across the prairies,” said Bill Wilton, President of POGA. “Oat producers are also keenly aware of how national policies influence our ability to make a fair return.”
The Oat Grower’s mission is to develop and support partnerships in the agricultural industry that will enhance the profitability of oats for the grower and increase its value to the customer.
POGA believes that the Grain Growers of Canada are well placed to advance common interests on issues like:
• Increased public research into cereal grains like oats
• International trade issues, for example EU subsidies
• Safety nets that work in the grain sector
• Grain transportation
“The Oat Growers feel there is value in working with other organizations that are also focused on growing the pie larger for everyone in agriculture. We already work closely with our value-added processors and think this new affiliation will help both our industry and our growers,” said Wilton.
