The Active and Safe Routes to School program at Green Action Centre has recognized the Hanover School Division as an Active School Champion for 2012.
The awards program is presented annually to an individual, school and community that shows outstanding achievement, leadership and vision in implementing active school travel initiatives throughout Manitoba.
The Hanover School Division is being recognized for their incredible efforts in expanding School Travel Planning to include 7 schools in three different municipalities – Steinbach, Landmark and Niverville.
Initially in 2010, Hanover School Division implemented School Travel Planning at Woodlawn School in Steinbach. Not only have they embraced the culture of walking and biking, but Woodlawn School ranked in the top 5 schools across Canada that increased walking on the way to school.
The school division recognizes the benefit of the community-based planning process and the 7 participating schools work collaboratively to support each others initiatives to increase active transportation.
