Tens of thousands of Manitoba youngsters will put on their Halloween costumes and take part in the time-honoured tradition of trick-or-treating Wednesday night – and Manitoba Public Insurance wants to ensure that each of them returns home safely.
Manitoba’s public auto insurer is reminding motorists to be extra cautious when behind the wheel on Halloween – and to keep their eyes peeled for flashing safety red lights.
“We have distributed more than 100,000 safety light-up devices to schools across the province,” said MaryAnn Kempe, vice-president of Community and Corporate Relations, Manitoba Public Insurance. “These devices can be clipped onto a child’s jacket or backpack so that they ‘light up the night’ when they’re out after dark.”
In addition to wearing the light-up device, Manitoba Public Insurance is encouraging all children to stay on sidewalks or at the side of the road, to travel in groups, to cross at corners and crosswalks, and to stop and look all ways before crossing.
“Halloween is a special evening for children and they can become very excited,” said Kempe. “We encourage motorists to be extra vigilant. Slow down, use caution and always keep both eyes on the road.”
