RCMP are currently investigating an in-custody death of a Gods Lake Narrows woman that occurred this past week.
On November 28, 2012, shortly after 10pm, Gods Lake Narrows RCMP were contacted and advised that a distraught female individual had telephoned the caller’s residence and was in need of medical assistance.
Officers attended the residence in Gods Lake Narrows and located a female who was escorted to the local Nursing Station for medical care. After being examined by medical staff, she was escorted and lodged in RCMP cells under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act.
On November 29, at 9am, the female complained to an officer of not feeling well. She was then returned to the Nursing Station and turned over to the nursing staff. She was subsequently medivaced to Winnipeg. On November 30, the 31-year-old female of Gods Lake Narrows passed away in Winnipeg.
The death is currently investigated by the RCMP D Division Serious Crime Unit. As per RCMP policy, the death is considered an in-custody matter since the deceased was in RCMP care in the hours preceding her death.
The Brandon Police Service will review the investigation. In addition, a local Community member was selected by Chief and Council to act as an observer in the investigation.
An autopsy was completed on December 3, 2012 in Winnipeg. The cause of death is pending toxicology results, however, there was no sign of foul play.
