On December 11, 2012, just before 5am, Selkirk RCMP and local emergency services responded to a report of a vehicle that had gone through the ice on the Red River at the Lockport Dam.
RCMP members along with Fire and Ambulance determined that a vehicle being operated southbound on the Red river when the driver drove into open water on the north side of the Lockport dam.
The driver, a 40-year-old man of Selkirk, managed to exit the vehicle and was found wet and cold. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say that the vehicle remains underwater. At present, RCMP are making efforts to confirm any possibility that the vehicle had any other occupants on board at the time it entered the water. The area is known for fast currents.
The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is being consulted and is attending the scene as the investigation progresses.
