On December 20, 2012, just after 1pm, Powerview RCMP stopped a 2004 Dodge Ram pick-up truck with two male occupants, towing a rental trailer.
Investigation led to the discovery of about 4,900 cartons, or 980,000 contraband cigarettes, with an estimated street value of $150,000.
The driver, a 32-year-old man from Fort Alexander, and the passenger, a 52-year-old man from Winnipeg, are facing charges of possession of contraband tobacco under the Excise Act.
Manitoba Finance advises that the two men will also be facing charges under the Manitoba Tobacco Tax Act and Miscellaneous Taxes Act, and could be facing fines of up to $10,000 and tax penalties of $750,000.
The two men have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Winnipeg Provincial Court on March 18, 2013.
