On January 1, 2013, shortly after 4:30am, Gimli RCMP Detachment and local Fire and EMS were dispatched to a residential fire on Autumnwood Drive in the Town of Gimli.
RCMP arrived on scene and observed smoke coming from the house as fire suppression efforts were already underway. RCMP learned that the occupants in the home at the time of the fire had been able to escaped the residence and were taken to the local hospital for care.
Police have confirmed that nine people, ranging in age from 12 to 41-years-old, were in the residence at the time of the fire. While several of the people required medical attention for non-life threatening injuries, two of the nine, an 18 and 41 year-old father and son of Gimli, remain in hospital for further treatment. Both were last reported in stable condition.
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner was contacted and attended the scene. The cause of the fire has been attributed to careless cooking and is considered accidental. Damage estimates are not available, however, the residence sustained extensive damages.
