Portage la Prairie RCMP are currently investigating the murder of an adult male that was found deceased in Long Plain First Nation on January 2, 2013. Assisting the Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment in this investigation is the D Division RCMP Serious Crime Unit, Winnipeg RCMP Major Crime Unit, Dauphin RCMP Major Crime Unit and the RCMP Brandon Forensic Identification Section.
RCMP are able to confirm that on January 2, 2012, a dispute broke out between several parties outside a residence and ended in the death of the victim, identified as a 24-year-old Portage la Prairie man. Two other adult males suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
On January 3, 2012, 21-year-old Cody Alexander Schmidt of Long Plain First Nation was arrested and has since been charged with 2nd Degree Murder. Schmidt will be appearing in Portage la Prairie Provincial Court on January 7, 2013. Two others were also arrested in this incident and have since been released without charge.
