On February 10, 2013, at about 6 pm, Killarney RCMP Detachment were notified of an overdue Cessna aircraft. At about 7 pm, the plane was located near Waskada with the assistance of Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians dispatched to the area.
Initial reports indicate the aircraft departed from a private airfield at about 1pm and was reported overdue at about 3pm. The downed aircraft was located at around 7pm about one-half mile from where it had taken off. The crash scene is reported to be in an open field.
Police say that the aircraft was located by members of the Royal Canadian Air Force Search and Rescue, 435 Squadron out of 17 Wing.
RCMP report that there were four deceased located in the aircraft who have been tentatively been identified as the 37-year-old male pilot and his two sons, ages 9 and 10, as well as another 9-year-old boy. All are from the Waskada area. There were no other persons aboard the aircraft.
RCMP continue the investigation with the assistance of the Transportation Safety Board and the RCMP Forensic Identification Section.
