RCMP North District Traffic Services recently partnered with Flin Flon/Cranberry Portage Detachment and Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship to conduct snowmobile checks on trails and lakes throughout the district.
Over the past three weeks, RCMP have conducted two static checks and one roving snowmobile patrol, targeting high-risk areas. During these checks, a total of 58 off-road vehicles were stopped by police, resulting in one charge of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and five liquor-related suspensions, six charges of operating an unregistered snowmobile, one charge of operating an off-road vehicle without a valid licence and one open liquor charge.
There is an average of four snowmobile-related deaths every year in Manitoba. Two-thirds of all snowmobile-related deaths in this province are caused by impaired operation and 90 per cent involve excess speed.
“One victim is one too many. We are encouraging people to make the responsible choice,” stresses Sgt. Eugene Yewchuk, North District Traffic Services.
