On April 21st, 2009 at 5am, the Nelson House RCMP received a report of a shooting behind a residence on Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.
A 16 year old male resident of the community was located behind the residence. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the lower torso.
The youth was transported by ambulance to the local nursing station and later to Thompson General Hospital. Later that afternoon the victim was further transported to Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. His condition is listed as serious.
Preliminary indicators are that the incident precipitated from an altercation between several youths. Members of Nelson House RCMP, Thompson Major Crime Unit along with The Pas and Thompson Forensic Identification Sections continue to investigate.
Update 04/24/09 11:10am
On April 22, 2009 at about 4:30 p.m., a 16-year-old local youth was arrested in Nelson House Cree Nation and taken into custody in connection with this incident. On April 23, 2009, following consultation with Manitoba Justice, he was formally charged with Attempt Murder, one Breach of a Prohibition Order in relation to possessing a firearm and one Breach for failing to keep the peace and be of good behavior.
He was remanded in custody and will be appearing in Thompson Court on April 28, 2009.
As of this morning, the victim remains in critical but stable condition.
The investigation continues.
