On April 27, 2013, at approximately 10pm, Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP and Ste. Rose Fire Department responded to a report of a father and daughter stuck in a low level water crossing. Police were told that the 12-year-old girl was in the water hanging onto a tree.
Police and fire arrived and located the father on the vehicles rooftop and the girl in the water holding onto a tree. Both had been traveling on a rural road and were attempting to cross a low level crossing which was under water.
RCMP report that their vehicle became immobile and the two became stuck. The girl entered the water and was swept downstream. The water was fast moving and contained moving ice chunks. Fire crew entered the water to neck level and were able to save the girl. Two firefighters, the girl and her father were taken to the Ste. Rose Hospital for treatment of various stages of hypothermia.
RCMP would like to remind everyone to use caution around spring waters. Streams and rivers are fast moving with cold temperatures and are dangerous.
