The RCMP will never stop trying to make Manitoba roadways safer. Despite the rainy weather over the long weekend, RCMP members were conducting Checkstops throughout the Province. The focus was on high-risk driving behaviours as part of the National Road Safety Week campaign, which ran from May 13-20 this year.
As a result of the campaign, there were:
- 43 Impaired driving charges (including 3 Impaired by Drugs)
- 16 alcohol-related administrative suspensions
- 68 charges for failing to wear seatbelts
- 746 charges for speeding
- 54 charges for fail to stop at an intersection
- 26 charges for using a handheld electronic device while driving
- 373 other traffic-related charges
- 21 Prohibited/Suspended Drivers
Three fatalities occurred during Road Safety Week this year.
In comparison, during the 2012 campaign, there were:
- 50 Impaired driving charges
- 5 alcohol-related administrative suspensions
- 90 charges for failing to wear seatbelts
- 665 charges for speeding
- 43 charges for fail to stop at an intersection
- 16 charges for using a handheld electronic device while driving
- 289 other traffic-related charges
- 32 Prohibited/Suspended Drivers
One fatal collision occurred over National Road Safety Week in 2012.
Educating the public in safe driving practices remains a priority of all RCMP Traffic Services Units and Detachments. Please stay safe on the road!
