A Steinbach teen is dead after a fellow camper discharged a firearm at what he believed was a bear in close proximity, striking the teen fatally.
On June 2, 2013, just before 4am, RCMP were dispatched to about 12 nautical miles from the community of Bloodvein on the Bloodvein River and advised that a firearm had been discharged. A 17-year-old Steinbach area male was reportedly deceased.
Due to the remote location, Powerview RCMP chartered a helicopter and attended the scene.
Early investigation indicates that a group of four males were out camping at Namay Falls. A 22-year-old Steinbach male was awoken to what he believed was a bear in close proximity of the tent and discharged a firearm striking the deceased fatally.
A post mortem is scheduled in Winnipeg today.
