A Manitoba fishing licence will not be required on June 8-9, and entry to provincial parks will be free June 7-9 to encourage Manitoba families and visitors to enjoy a day in the great outdoors. This announcement was made by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh.

“Our provincial parks and fishing opportunities are world-class,” said Mackintosh. “I want Manitobans to take this opportunity to create wonderful memories with family and friends, enjoying the beauty and bounty of our many lakes and rivers, and the wide range of outdoor activities available in our parks.”

Summer family fishing weekends have been offered since 1992. On June 8 and 9, anglers will be able to fish without a licence province-wide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required.

Anglers fishing without a licence will be allowed to keep a conservation limit of fish, which varies by species. All other rules and regulations will apply, as outlined in the 2013 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide.

Many camping opportunities remain available at campgrounds across the province throughout the season. To make a reservation, visit www.manitobaparks.com.

In recognition of the free family fishing weekend, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote fishing as a fun family activity.

“We want families to capture the beauty of Manitoba’s scenic waterways and post their photos on our Facebook page by June 17,” said Beverley Sawchuk, administrative director, Manitoba Wildlife Federation. “Three random names will be drawn for family gift packs valued at more than $100.”

Established in 1944, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is Manitoba’s oldest and largest conservation organization and works to ensure healthy fish and wildlife populations. For more information, call 204-633-5967 or visit www.mwf.mb.ca.

The minister reminded Manitobans they can submit their nominations for a provincial fish.

“Manitoba has over 80 native fish species in diverse habitats across the province,” said Mackintosh. “Nominating a provincial fish recognizes the important role of fishing to our province, both culturally and economically.”
