On July 14, 2013, just after 5:30pm, Russell RCMP as well as local emergency services were dispatched to the scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 16, just south of Binscarth.
Investigation and witness statements indicate that a male riding a 2007 Harley Davidson was traveling north when it crossed the dividing line into oncoming traffic. A 1997 Dodge Ram pick-up truck towing a camper trailer was southbound at the location. The driver of the pick-up truck swerved to avoid the motorcycle and went into the ditch. The motorcycle collided with the side of the camper trailer.
RCMP report that the truck and trailer both overturned and began to burn. The 58-year-old male driver and 53-year-old female passenger, both from Edmonton, were able to escape the truck before it and the trailer were completely destroyed by fire. They were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Police say that the motorcyclist, a 59-year-old man from the Inglis area, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst attended to assist with the ongoing investigation.
