The lower campground at Kiche Manitou campground at Spruce Woods Provincial Park is once again open after repairs to damage caused by flooding in 2011. This announcement was made by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh.

“The damage to the lower campground was severe, but we’ve now completed the cleanup and it’s once again open to the public,” said Mackintosh. “The parks reservation website has been updated and people can book sites online at this very popular campground.”

The minister noted more than $20 million will be invested in the reconstruction of the park over the next seven years. This year, $3.7 million will be invested for:

  • shoreline erosion control,
  • improvements to the main campground access road,
  • the construction of two permanent washroom buildings and two permanent washroom/shower buildings in the lower
  • campground, and
  • campground road improvements and minor landscaping.

To allow as much construction time as possible and ensure the work is completed for the next camping season, the lower campground will close following the September long weekend. The upper campground will remain open until Thanksgiving weekend, as usual.

Future work will include flood protection works, further park infrastructure reconstruction and improvements, and a new sewage lagoon. The design for a new sewage lagoon is complete and an application for environmental licensing for the lagoon has been submitted.  A public notice and comment period will be included in the licensing process.

The minister noted the investment meets commitments set out in Building The Parks Province:  Manitoba’s Parks Strategy to invest more than $100 million in park infrastructure by 2020.

Mackintosh thanked Cliff Cullen, MLA for Spruce Woods where the park is located, for his support for this historic investment.
