More space will allow more surgeries to meet community needs
Communities in the area will benefit from a $14-million expansion and renovation to the Hôpital Ste. Anne Hospital. This announcement was made today by Premier Greg Selinger.
“The Ste. Anne Hospital plays a critical role in providing services to the ever-growing population of the southeast area including a large francophone community and other residents from diverse cultural backgrounds,” said Selinger. “This expansion will ensure the facility can deliver more health services closer to home for patients and families in these communities.”
A new 17,000-square-foot addition to the hospital will house two operating rooms, a scope procedure room, a post-anesthesia care unit, a medical-device reprocessing suite of rooms for cleaning/sterilizing of all reusable items, a family waiting room and new electrical/mechanical rooms.
As a result of the expansion, the hospital’s square footage has increased by 60 per cent. In addition, the location of the original operating rooms was renovated and converted to provide 5,800 square feet of additional staff support areas.
“These two new operating rooms and a new endoscopy room will significantly increase the number of procedures that doctors can perform on local residents, giving families the help they need sooner and without having to leave their community,” said Health Minister Theresa Oswald.
“Many community members have done much to support this hospital, which offers critically important health services to families across our region,” said Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux. “We commend them on their efforts and are pleased to have been able to support their efforts and vision.”
“These improvements mark exciting additions to the Hôpital Ste. Anne Hospital infrastructure and the region’s surgical program, which will be appreciated by caregivers, patients and people in the Southern Health-Santé Sud community,” said Kathy McPhail, CEO of Southern Health-Santé Sud. “The outstanding efforts of staff, physicians, Manitoba Health and community partners on this redevelopment project were key to the project’s success.”
The Ste. Anne’s Hospital Foundation has committed to make a 10 per cent contribution towards the expansion.
The premier noted the redevelopment fulfils the government’s promise to increase the hospital’s operating capacity and double the number of operations and diagnostic tests performed annually.
He said the expansion allows for the repatriation of some surgical procedures from Steinbach and Winnipeg, which will provide care closer to patients’ home, adding the project will achieve Manitoba’s green building and sustainability objectives.
Hôpital Ste. Anne Hospital is a 21-bed, acute-care facility, primarily serving a francophone population in southeastern Manitoba. Recent past capital investments in the hospital have included a $1.5million project for safety and security upgrades including the relocation of the nursing station and the creation of two birthing rooms.
