Manitobans are reminded they will have the opportunity to get a first-hand look at agriculture this weekend as part of the fourth annual Open Farm Day on Sunday, Sept. 15. This announcement was made by Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Ron Kostyshyn.

“The success of this event year over year shows the pride that Manitoba farmers take in their work and the role they play in our rural communities and the agricultural industry,” said Kostyshyn. “With many things to do and types of farms to visit, there is truly something for everyone to learn and explore on Open Farm Day.”

This year, over 60 farms are participating in Open Farm Day. Visitors are encouraged to meet local producers, learn about modern farming operations and participate in fun activities and demonstrations. For farmers, this is a unique opportunity to tell their story to other Manitobans, to market products directly to visitors, support agri-tourism and showcase farm life as the ultimate family business, the minister said.

“This is a great program, a great way for people to come out and enjoy a day of learning,” said Cory Lomax of Wildfire Farms, who is opening the gates to his family farm in the Tolstoi area. Guests to his farm will see 100 per cent grass-fed beef, free-range chickens and laying hens, an heirloom vegetable garden, and will be able to access an on-site farmers’ market.

For the first time, geocachers can also search for caches located at several participating farms. For more information, go to geocaching.com.

Manitoba’s first Open Farm Day took place in 2010. Since then, the number of participating farms and visitors has continued to grow, with 51 farms hosting over 4,600 visitors last year.
