STEP is a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program. A number of times throughout the year, the RCMP will conduct concentrated traffic enforcement initiatives.
With school back in session, students are out in full force. Over the next few weeks Central Plains RCMP will be partnering with MPI to conduct targeted enforcement in school zones. Police will be out on patrol ensuring motorists are driving with care in school zones, following the posted speed limits and obeying the laws surrounding school buses and pedestrian cross walks.
The goal is to ensure the safety of everyone on and along the roadways as well as to raise public awareness about road safety through education and traffic enforcement initiatives such as this one.
Motorists should be aware that they are not to pass a stopped school bus at any time, or other vehicles within a school zone. The fine for passing a stopped school bus is $673.65. The fine for passing a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian, passing in a pedestrian corridor or failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian is nearly $143.75.
With the motoring public doing their part by obeying the laws and adjusting their driving in school zones they can assist in keeping the children within our communities safer.
