On September 16, 2013, shortly after 5pm, Virden RCMP as well as local Fire and EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle collision involving an overturned fuel tanker. The collision occurred about 15 km south of Melita on Highway 83, near the community of Elva.
Police say that the driver, who was the sole occupant of the fuel tanker, was transported to Melita Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short while after arriving. He has been identified as a 52-year-old area man from the local area.
The tanker was hauling 15,000 litres of diesel fuel at the time of the collision.
Virden RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the collision with the assistance of an RCMP Traffic Analyst.
