Steinbach Arts Council is proud to present the exhibit “Barn Dance” by local artist Lynda Toews from November 13 to December 19 at the Hall Gallery in the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre.
Lynda Rose Toews was born in Winnipeg in 1962. She would have grown up on a southern Manitoba farm had her father not become allergic to grain dust and had to move to Winnipeg. In spite of having to grow up in the city, Toews did spend many summer holidays in the country and developed a love for nature and animals. She did her university Fine Arts painting thesis on endangered flower species of the Canadian tall grass prairie.
Toews has degrees in Fine Arts and Education from the University of Manitoba. She has exhibited in various art exhibitions and her work is represented in numerous private and public collections. She has exhibited in juried shows at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and at the Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery in Winnipeg, and had a 130-foot mural of coast-to-coast Canadian landscape on display for years at the original Winnipeg International Airport transborder lounge. Her involvement in arts education includes writing the Manitoba provincial position paper for arts education curriculum renewal and writing the education section of an art website for the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Now living east of Steinbach since 2010, she has exhibited her art locally at SAC’s Loewen Green Art Scene and at the Mennonite Heritage Village.
Since moving to the country, Toews has found herself enjoying photographing and painting farm animals in the surrounding area. From an artistic point of view, Toews is inspired by the simple, everyday life and personality of the animals in their environment and the way that the light of early morning or late afternoon “silverlines” their forms while creating a dramatic mood.
Everyone is invited to attend the opening ceremony. Refreshments will be served. No Admission. Toonie Donation is requested and greatly appreciated.
