A Hanover man is facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle by a drug, after being arrested by Steinbach RCMP this past week.
In the early morning hours on November 14, 2013, Steinbach RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling in the east end of Steinbach. After dealing with the driver, police determined that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by a drug. The driver was arrested and compelled to undergo a drug recognition evaluation. The evaluation was conducted and supported the officers belief.
As a result, charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle are now pending against an adult male from the RM of Hanover. The man is set to appear in Steinbach Court in December.
Police would like to remind the public that many prescription medications and non prescription drugs have impairing effects on the body much like alcohol does as that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle if you are impaired. For years, the RCMP has been providing specialized training to officers to detect a driver under the influence of drugs and more and more officers are now trained in the area, making the recognition and awareness of this occurrence much greater. The penalty of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by a drug carries the same penalty in the Criminal Code that operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol would.
