From December 2 to December 8, 2013, the RCMP Holiday Checkstop Program has resulted in numerous charges.
- 3475 vehicles were checked across Manitoba during 107 Checkstops
- 22 people were charged with either impaired driving or driving over .08
- The average blood/alcohol reading was 155 mgs% (0.155) – roughly twice the legal limit
- The highest blood/alcohol reading was 220 mgs% (0.220) – nearly three times the legal limit
- An additional 4 people were charged with Refusal and 2 people were charged with impaired by a drug
Other numbers from week one of the 2013/2014 program include:
- 11 administrative alcohol-related roadside suspensions
- 8 people charged for not wearing seatbelts
- 199 other traffic related provincial statute (Highway Traffic Act) charges laid
- 14 people charged with Liquor Control Act offences
- 8 other Criminal Code driving offences
- 2 Drug seizures under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
There was one fatal collision during the past week, a head-on collision near Neepawa, which resulted in the deaths of two people.
Last year during week one, there were no traffic-related fatalities. RCMP members conducted 69 Checkstops, checking 2603 vehicles resulting in 19 people being charged with Criminal Code impaired driving.
Despite the frigid temperatures, RCMP Members conducted additional Checkstops this year due to the extra focus on the first “National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day” on December 7. The Holiday Checkstop program will continue running until January 2, 2014.
