On December 29, 2013, at 7am, while on patrol in Black River First Nation, Powerview RCMP were advised of a sexual assault that had occurred earlier that morning.
Police investigation revealed that an adult female had been held down by an adult male while being sexually assaulted by another adult male. The male who assaulted her threatened her life with a firearm if she reported the incident to police.
After investigating the incident, RCMP arrested 25-year-old Nathaniel Stanford Wayne Bird on December 29 and took him into custody. A search warrant was prepared and successfully executed, resulting in the seizure of three firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition. One of the firearms was a high-powered rifle with the barrel and stock sawed off, one was a semi-automatic small caliber assault style rifle and the third was a small caliber bolt action rifle. Bird faces numerous assault and firearms charges.
41-year-old Vincent James Bird, the remaining suspect, was located later on December 29 and taken into custody. He has been charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement.
Both suspects have been remanded into custody for a court appearance in Winnipeg on December 31.
