Steinbach RCMP are issuing an alert to the public about a fraud that has surfaced in the Steinbach area.
Several Steinbach residents have been contacted and told that one of their relatives has been in a car accident. The caller then tells them that in order for their relative to maintain a clean driving record and stay out of jail, they are to send money to a representative for the other involved driver, usually indicating the second driver is from out of country.
Police say that in recent instances, varying sums of money up to $4000 have been sent via moneygram or Western Union. Only later, do residents find out that they were a victim of fraud. Police urge people to be wary when receiving such calls.
If you do receive a similar call, Steinbach RCMP suggest you treat these calls as a scam and urge victims to contact them or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
