The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce and Eastman Immigrant Services hosted the 5th Annual Eastman Employment Fair last night at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre. This year’s Fair saw 32 exhibitors under one roof meeting with prospective employees from all across the southeast.
“With a record number of attendees coming through the doors – just over 600 in total – this is the largest Job Fair we have hosted” says Marina Klassen, Fair coordinator and Career Coach with Eastman Immigrant Services. “We also had a great cross-section of attendees with some coming looking for work, others coming in hopes of making a career change, and still others who want to stay informed with who is hiring in the area for future opportunities.”
Exhibitors ranged from manufacturing to health care to law enforcement and emergency services to financial services and more. Kyla Murray from the Chamber of Commerce said “Businesses were pleased with the turnout and many of them left with stacks of resumes so it seems to have been a very successful evening for our employers. That’s a good indication of success for us as organizers.”
Past Fairs have had some interesting individual success stories. Klassen recalls that “at the 2012 Fair, a newcomer from the trucking industry had come to see what was available and ended up making a great connection with a law enforcement establishment and was soon hired as a direct result of the Fair – he is now enjoying a new and very fulfilling career. We also had a company from the southeast who attended our Fair in 2013 who ended up hiring a high level manager as a result of a contact made at our Fair. We are so pleased to see hires being made in all levels of these companies that participate in our event.”
Plans are already underway for the 2015 Fair.
