Manitoba Public Insurance statistics show that in Canada, more than 70 children under the age of 13 are killed and more than 10,000 are injured in collisions every year.
While a simple click does for adult passengers, young ones on the road need some special attention. There are several things you can do to protect your child in a collision:
- Always buckle your child in
- Always buckle yourself in, for you will be unable to assist your child if you are thrown from your vehicle in a collision
- Know which car seat to use for your child’s stage of development. The four stages are rear-facing for infants, forward-facing for small children, booster seats and seatbelts
- Look for the National Safety mark when purchasing a car seat, and ensure it meets Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
- Check the expiry date before purchasing a car seat, as an expired seat means the plastic could be compromised, reducing the seat’s ability to protect your child in a collision
- Replace any car seat that has been in a collision as its structure may be compromised
- Check Transport Canada’s website to see if there are any recalls or public notices relating to child car seats
