On March 23, 2014, shortly before 3:45am, The Pas RCMP received a report of a shooting victim being treated at The Pas Hospital. Police say that a 24-year-old male resident of The Pas was found to have suffered a single gun shot wound to his lower body. He was treated and released a short time later.
On the same day, shortly after 5:30 am, The Pas RCMP received a report that an armed robbery had occurred at McDonald’s Restaurant in The Pas. Police say that two male subjects, both wearing bandanas over their faces, walked through the drive through. During the payment of their order, one of the male subjects armed with a sawed-off rifle, pointed it at the employee. As a result of the employee’s quick action, he was able to force the gun out the window, but not before being sprayed with bear mace and the suspects fleeing on foot. There were no serious injuries.
RCMP Police Dog Services along with members of The Pas and Opaskwayak RCMP were able to identify the suspects responsible for the robbery and arrested them without incident at a residence located at Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Police obtained a search warrant to search the residence which resulted in the recovery of the firearm and other items believed to have been used in both the shooting and armed robbery.
RCMP report that a 17-year-old male youth of Opaskwayak Cree Nation and a 19-year-old male subject of Fort McMurray, Alberta, face numerous charges in connection with both the shooting and the armed robbery.
