A flood warning is being issued for all points along Birdtail Creek north of Birtle in western Manitoba.

The Manitoba Hydrological Forecast Centre advises a large ice jam near a rail bridge is holding back a significant amount of water and may cause a surge of water along Birdtail Creek when the ice lets go.

The Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) is advising members of the public living in low-lying areas of the Birdtail Creek downstream of the former railway embankment to be prepared to leave the area quickly.

EMO has contacted the communities and municipalities that could be affected including the rural municipalities of Birtle, Miniota and Rossburn, the town of Birtle, the Birdtail Sioux First Nation and the Waywayseecapo First Nation. Provincial officials continue to work with local governments to monitor and update the situation.
