May 9th is day to remember and thank those who served in Afghanistan: Goertzen
Manitobans will be able, either individually or at planned ceremonies, to remember and offer thanks this Friday for the sacrifices made by members of the Canadian Armed Forces during their deployment in Afghanistan, said Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen.
“May 9th is a National Day of Honour to thank those who have served in the Afghanistan mission and to support the friends and families of those who lost loved ones in the mission in Afghanistan,” said Goertzen. “As Canadians and Manitobans, we are fortunate to have men and women who are willing to serve on behalf of their entire country.”
A two minute national moment of silence is being encouraged to take place at 1:30pm EDT to coincide with events across the country.
In Manitoba events will take place at CFB Shilo and at the Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.
Goertzen says that as with all military missions, history will judge its outcome but the National Day of Honour is about thanking and remembering those who answered the call of their country to serve in the mission.
