After over a decade of hard work, race car driver and Niverville native, David Richert, earned a chance to enjoy the privilege of blasting through the Ardennes forest on the iconic circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Richert is now off to Austria in advance of this weekend’s AFR Remus Formula Cup race weekend at the picturesque Red Bull Ring nestled into the Austrian Alps.
On May 8th, Richert took part in a one day test session at the famous Belgian circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. The 7km long circuit is one of the favorites amongst all race car drivers as it proves a significant test with the many high speed and challenging corners including the infamous “Eau Rouge” and “Raidillon”. This sequence of corners begins at the bottom of a valley and sees a driver make a quick left turn, then a right, then another blind left, all while climbing a steep hill at full throttle. After dry weather for the morning, the clouds opened up and the daunting task of piloting a race car around a wet Spa-Francorchamps circuit became the chore of the afternoon sessions.
It was absolutely a dream come true for me to be able to drive an open wheel race car around Spa-Francorchamps. I’ve worked the last 12 years of my life to get myself into that position so it definitely made me appreciate the moment. Driving uphill through the Eau Rouge sequence of corners at 225km/h is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve ever done. ~ David Richert
Richert is set to make the trip for Austria and the AFR Remus Formula Cup which will be his second race event of the 2014 season. This weekend’s events will take place at the beautiful Austrian circuit known as the Red Bull Ring. Formerly known as the A1 Ring and Osterreichring, the Red Bull Ring has spent many years hosting the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix and is another race circuit steeped in racing history.
I am really excited to get this race event underway and it looks like a very good chance of rain throughout the weekend, so it will be a huge challenge. My aim is always to ensure I put forward my best effort, however, this time I think our goal needs to be set even higher and hopefully we can bring home a trophy. It will be immensely difficult but sooner or later the hard work needs to pay off. ~ David Richert
The race weekend will get underway on Friday, May 16th, with Free Practice and then follow with Race 1 on Saturday morning and Race 2 taking place Sunday afternoon.
