On May 16, 2014, Headingley RCMP were called to a fire at the United Church in Starbuck, Manitoba. When officers arrived on scene, the building was fully engulfed. The local fire department attended and put out the fire.
Police investigation revealed this was a non-criminal matter. A 42-year-old male had been burning leaves and other yard debris in a barrel at a property close to the church. The fire got out of control and ignited the church.
RCMP report that the male has been charged with starting a fire that burned out of control under the Wildfires Act. This charge results in a $1,297.30 fine.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner assisted with the investigation.
