On May 18, 2014, at approximately 9:30am, Russell RCMP, along with local ambulance and fire, responded to a report of an airplane crash at the Russell Airport. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered an overturned Cessna Model 182P, approximately half a kilometre south of the runway. There was no smoke or fire.
Police say that the pilot, a 61-year-old male, along with a 56-year-old female passenger and a 83-year-old female passenger, all from the Miniota area, sustained non-life threatening injuries and were taken to local hospital.
Initial investigation points to difficulties with the take-off as resulting in the crash. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will continue the investigation from this point. Police say that there is nothing criminal in nature in relation to this incident.
