Wants to ensure parents are informed, teachers and staff are empowered
Mitchell resident Susan Doerksen today announced that she will be running for the position of school trustee in the Mitchell/Blumenort/Landmark ward with the goal of increasing parental involvement in the school system and ensuring the voice of teachers and school staff are heard.
“I am committed to working closely with teachers, school staff and parents to ensure their voices are heard and that our schools are strong. We have great staff in our schools and strong families in Hanover. We need to listen to them and make sure our schools are the best they can be,” said Doerksen.
Doerksen and her husband Jason (Jed) have three children with their two school aged children enrolled in the public school system in the Hanover School Division. Student safety is also a key priority for her.
“As a parent, I know that we put a lot of trust in the school system and division to look out for the well-being of all students. There is always a concern that your children may be bullied in school. It’s heartbreaking to see anyone being bullied, for any reason, and I want to work toward ensuring that all children feel safe and accepted in our schools,” said Doerksen. “I feel the best way to achieve this is to listen to parents and those who work in our schools to see what works and where we can improve things. The best ideas come from listening to those most directly affected.”
While Doerksen’s primary focus has been the raising of her children, she has been an active volunteer for several years in southeast Manitoba having volunteered time with the Relay for Life, Southeast Helping Hands, the Bethesda Foundation, the Steinbach Arts Council and the Children’s Wish Foundation. Most recently she spends time volunteering for Steinbach Community Outreach, an initiative of the Steinbach Mennonite Church.
Doerksen is also well known for her love of music and being a member of local country band McKenzie Road.
“I believe in giving back to the community where I can. I enjoy being able to volunteer in my sons’ classrooms lending support to their wonderful teachers, and I would love to be more involved in serving our schools. The privilege to act as a school trustee is an opportunity to do just that. It would be an honour to serve as a trustee on the Hanover School Board, and to work for the people of my ward and the Division.”
