Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra has officially announced his intention to seek a third term on Steinbach City Council in October’s municipal election.
Zwaagstra filed his registration papers with the City earlier this week. He says that the City has made significant improvements to basic infrastructure over the past four years and he would like to see that work continue.
“I’m pleased that this council has kept a strong focus on maintaining and improving basic infrastructure. Fixing our roads and upgrading our underground infrastructure must always be a top priority,” said Zwaagstra.
Zwaagstra was first elected to city council in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. He chaired the Mayor’s Task Force on Public Safety and has served as Deputy Mayor since 2012.
Zwaagstra noted that the city continues to work towards upgrading recreation facilities for both sports activities and arts and culture. A second splash park, new curling rink, and improvements to the sound system and seating at the Centennial Arena are some recent enhancements. The City is also in the planning process for a larger multi-use facility.
Balancing growth and expansion with fiscal responsibility remains a top priority for Zwaagstra. He notes that Steinbach has the lowest municipal tax rate in the province and he intends to keep it that way.
“While we need to plan for new facilities, it is important to keep in mind that many people in Steinbach are on fixed incomes. We need to always ensure that Steinbach remains an affordable place to live,” said Zwaagstra.
Zwaagstra added that he’s looking forward to hearing from Steinbach residents when he begins knocking on their doors during this campaign.
